I look forward to welcoming you to Yokohama, Japan, for the 16th World Congress on Pain. Since its inception, IASP has brought together scientists, clinicians, and health-care providers from many fields to stimulate and support the study of pain and translate the knowledge generated by research into improved pain relief worldwide. This Congress presents an ideal opportunity for all of us to meet and exchange news and views.

Claudia Sommer and the Scientific Program Committee have put together an exciting series of refresher courses, plenary sessions, and workshops that cover the entire range of IASP members’ interests and promise to be every bit as inspiring as those of previous congresses.

I am grateful for the many proposals we received, which reflects IASP’s vibrant membership community. Plenary speakers from around the world will offer up-to-date lectures on mechanisms, assessment, and treatment of pain that will interest clinicians and researchers alike. Ten parallel tracks of workshops will allow participants either to follow progress close to their own line of work or switch between areas of interest for additional inspiration.

Workshops sponsored by IASP Special Interest Groups and joint sessions with other scientific societies will add a special flavor to the meeting. Delegates will see that Yokohama’s Pacifico Conference Center provides ample space for highly interactive poster sessions that will exhibit the latest news from laboratory and clinical research.

Yokohama is a city that showcases modern life in a country with an interesting culture and tradition. I hope you will enjoy both the science and the city.

I look forward to seeing you there.

IASP President
